Dieting Without Hunger
I was reminded this past weekend of how nice it is that the foods I normally eat allow me to diet and lose weight without hunger. This past Saturday, I was faced with a typical dieter dilemma. My son and his wife came over for dinner at 6 PM. My wife had fixed a special meal with normal good food but not the special diet food that I had worked out for myself with much experimentation and study. The dilemma is whether I try to make the best choices possible and eat, or just sit with everyone to be sociable and drink water. I usually eat one meal a day. The food timing was off too, as I normally eat a couple of hours later at 8 PM to help avoid before bed hunger and snacking. That also keeps my blood sugar from dipping low during the night. I decided to go ahead and eat. My choices were a couple of chicken breasts, a couple of big scoops of broccoli slaw, and some roasted sweet potatoes, carrots, and beets. What I was afraid of happened. By 8 PM I was hungry and then gave in when dessert was served and ended up having several helpings of banana bread. What I normally do if I am at something like a church potluck is just drink water and socialize.
The next day I got back on track with the diet. I could be satisfied with my current weight since I have gotten back into my old clothes. But I have decided that I want to slim down my belly a little bit more. Being able to both lose weight or eat a maintenance diet while not struggling with hunger have been big goals that I had sought for years. Over the last 25 years, my weight has gone up and down several times as I tried different diet plans and then went back to what I used to eat. I tried a whole range of diets from largely vegetarian to carnivore and have currently settled on an optimized Keto diet that works for me. Note that will not be the perfect diet for others. Many, maybe even most, people, will not have to go to the extremes that my body requires.
